Southwest Minnesota State University head women's and men's Cross Country & Track and Field coach Nate Wolf has announced 24 student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at SMSU, and one of those include former Worthington Trojan Track and Cross Country standout O.J. Ojullu.
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa – Two show goats and three dogs are dead in a controversial incident near Rock Rapids over the weekend. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that the dogs were found eating the goats, and the goat farmer shot the dogs.
WORTHINGTON – The Worthington City Council met Monday night and awarded a bid of $41,034 for stump grinding and seeding to Prairie Landscaping, owned by Allen Drost. The difference between Prairie Landscaping and the next lowest bid was almost $30,000. According to Director of Public Works Jim Eulberg, there are just under 800 stumps in the city that need grinding as a result of the April ice storm. Topsoil and seeding is part of the bid price, with the city providing the seed.

STORM LAKE, Iowa — The body of an Ireton, Iowa man was found Sunday after a search that began on the fourth of July. At about 4 p.m. Thursday, the Buena Vista County 911 Center received a call reporting a capsized boat with two occupants on Storm Lake. 36-year-old Abel Troncoso of Granville, was rescued by another boat in the immediate area. The other occupant of the boat, 28-year-old Jaime Vazquez of Ireton slipped beneath the water. Vazquez was reportedly not wearing a life vest at the time the boat capsized.
WINDOM – The Windom Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating three riding lawnmowers stolen from the Runnings store in Windom last night or early this morning. The stolen mowers include a 50 inch Cub Cadet in near new condition, an MTD 42 inch in near new condition and a Poulan 42 inch approximately two years old. A trailer may have been used to take the mowers or multiple trips with a pick-up were made. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Windom Police Department at 507-831-6134.
WORTHINGTON – This week’s Cop on Top event raised more than $6,600 for Special Olympics Minnesota, according to Worthington Police Officer Jacki Bomgaars.
The 24-hour fundraiser began Tuesday at 6 p.m. with Bomgaars raised to the top of the Hy-Vee Food Store by the Worthington Fire Department aerial truck. For the next 24 hours, Bomgaars and other officer worked in 4 hour shifts, laughingly heckling shoppers into donating for a great cause.
Burgers were served, t-shirts sold and donations grew.

The Toronto Raptors announced Wednesday they have named Jackson County Central graduate and Lakefield native Teresa Resch as director of basketball operations.
Resch will serve as the liaison between basketball and team business operations. She also will assist in off-court player development projects.
WORTHINGTON – Pavement reconstruction on First Avenue Southwest is tentatively scheduled to begin Monday, beginning east of the Prairie Elementary School entrance driveway to west of the intersection of Schaap Drive, according to the City of Worthington Engineering Department. Park Avenue water main reconstruction from Oxford Street to West Clary Street continues.
CLEVELAND (AP) — A man charged with holding three women captive in his Cleveland home for about a decade and raping them has been found competent to stand trial.
A Cuyahoga County judge said during a hearing Wednesday that an examination found that 52-year-old Ariel Castro is mentally able to understand the charges and assist attorneys in his defense.
Castro has pleaded not guilty to a 329 count indictment that includes multiple kidnapping and rape charges. He's being held on an $8 million bond.
