ARNOLD’S PARK, Iowa - Citing circumstances beyond his control, the Mayor of Arnolds Park resigned Friday afternoon, effective immediately. Meeting in special session late Friday, the city council voted unanimously to accept the resignation of Mike Mitchell and started to look at options for a successor. City Administrator Ron Walker says the council is intending to appoint someone to fill the position.


Murder-suicide reported at Crossroads Care Center

WORTHINGTON – The Worthington Police Department is investigating a murder-suicide that occurred Friday evening at the Crossroads Care Center on McMillan Street in Worthington.

According to Police Chief Mike Cumiskey, officers responded at 9:55 p.m. to a report of gunshots fired in a private room at the facility. They found 87-year-old George Doust sitting on a bed with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. In an adjacent bed was Crossroads Care Center resident Doris Doust, also with a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was recovered in the room.


USDA's 2012 Census of Ag Results

On Friday, May 2nd, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the final 2012 Census of Agriculture results sharing a wide-range of information about what agricultural products were raised in the United States in 2012, and where, how and by whom they were grown. The data, which is reported at the national, state and county level, will help farmers, ranchers, local officials, agribusiness and others make decisions for the future.


Brick City Grill Named Iowa's Best Burger

The 5th Annual Iowa's Best Burger contest just wrapped up, as put together by the Iowa Cattlemen's Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council. Congratulations to Brick City Grill in Ames, Iowa!

Iowans submitted more than 9,600 nomination votes for 456 restaurants in February and March that selected the Top Ten restaurants. The Top Ten were then independently visited and judged based on the hamburger's taste, appearance, and proper serving temperature (160 degrees).

JACKSON -- The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout for a stolen 2000 Bobcat CT 235 utility tractor. The machine, along with an attached front loader, was reported missing from the Loon Lake Golf Course on April 30. It was allegedly removed from a shed at the golf course. Owners and deputies followed tracks on township roads leading them into Iowa at the intersection of 210th Avenue and Highway 9 west of Spirit Lake, Iowa, where the trail was lost. The sheriff’s office requests anyone with information regarding this theft to call 847-4420.


Minnesota FFA Convention Results

The 85th Annual Minnesota State FFA Convention wrapped up this week, with many area FFA members and alumni taking home high honors.

Big congratulations to Deb Martin, Worthington ag teacher and FFA advisor, as one of the 19 individuals to receive the Honorary State FFA Degree!

This honor is presented to teachers, individuals and companies who have demonstrated continued success and support of the FFA and/or ag education, and made a significant impact and contribution to the success of students and the organization.

SIBLEY -- Devan Vander Veen, a senior at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School, was elected Iowa FFA vice president representing the Northwest Region during the 86th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference Tuesday night in Ames.

Vander Veen was one of 24 candidates vying for a position on the state officer team and continues a four-year string of state officers hailing from the Sibley-Ocheyedan FFA Chapter. To earn the state officer position, Vander Veen participated in a two-day interview process last week that included seven rounds of personal questions, speeches and essay writing.


Project Morning Star presented to drug court team

WORTHINGTON – The Cornerstone Drug Court Team was presented today with information about the proposed Project Morning Star Residential Recovery program, a transitional housing program in which residents can work on their recovery from addiction in a safe, stable and sober environment before re-entering the community on their own.
