DeJong takes home gold and silver from Cadet Pan-American Championships
It was quite a weekend for Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Hunter DeJong at the Cadet Pan-American Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Wrestling for Team USA, DeJong came back home with a gold medal in Freestyle and a Silver Medal in Greco-Roman.
In the Freestyle completion at 85 kilograms (187 pounds), Hunter DeJong opened up the tournament with a 10-0 decision over Marcos Barbosa Da Silva of Brazil. In the 2nd round, DeJong was a winner by a 12-0 decision over Sunny Benning of Canada. In round 3, DeJong was a winner by a 7-1 decision over Christian Salter of Puerto Rico advancing DeJong to the Gold Medal match. In the Gold Medal match, DeJong was a winner by a 10-4 decision over Pedro Garay Lopez of Mexico to take home the Gold Medal.
In the Greco-Roman portion of the Championships at 85 kilograms (187 pounds), Hunter DeJong opened up with a loss in the first round to Luis Lopez Vazquez of Mexico by a 10-2 decision. DeJong bounced back with a win in Round 2 over Fernando Alves de Queiroz of Brazil by a 10-1 decision. In the 3rd round, DeJong was a winner over Christian Salter of Puerto Rico by a 6-4 decision and took home the silver medal in Greco-Roman.
Team USA won medals in all divisions it had wrestlers competing at the Cadet Pan-American and won the team titles in Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women’s Wrestling.
This past high school wrestling season, DeJong finished his junior season with a 51-6 record and a 4th place finish at the 195 pound weight class in Class 1A and helped the Generals to a 5th place finish in the Class 1A State Duals
