Worthington's 2014 Winterfest is January 17 and 18th. Be sure to check out the variety of events, such as the YMCA Healthy Heart Walk/Run, the Deep Freeze Dip, and 3-on-3 Pond Hockey Tournament!
Friday, January 17th
Winterfest kicks off with the Chili Cook-Off at the Hickory Lodge. The fun starts at 5 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. with taste testing and voting for People's Choice. Heart walkers/runners can also pick up your t-shirt packet at the Hickory Lodge during this time (5 to 7 p.m.). If you are a Deep Freeze Dip participant, turn in your pledge cards and pledges. Then the Crowning of the Winterfest Snow Queen will take place, with other event announcements throughout the night.
Saturday, January 18th
Second Annual Winterfest Pond Hockey Tournament will be held Saturday along Lake Okabena’s Centennial Beach.Teams will be compromised of four players and will have an entry fee of $20.00 per team. All teams guaranteed two games. Games will have three, five minute periods with 2 minute breaks. Play will be three on three with switches on the fly. All rules are subject to change. Competition brackets will be set based on participation numbers. More information, call Jason Johnson at 507-329-0201.
Registration for the Southwest Minnesota Fishing Club’s Winterfest ice fishing contest on Lake Okabena begins at 8 a.m. in Sunset Park, with the fishing derby taking place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Up for grabs as the grand prize this year is a Clam portable fish house, with 19 other prizes also offered to those who reel in a lunker or a little throw-back.
Any size fish can win it.
At 8:45 a.m., walkers and runners can check in and register at the YMCA for the 2014 Winterfest Healthy Heart 2-mile walk/run. Participants may choose to participate on the indoor track at the YMCA or on the outdoor route. Cost is $15. The actual walk/run begins at 9:30 a.m.
We can't forget about the Deep Freeze Dip happening at Sunset Park at 3 p.m. This year's funds will go towards the Wayne Klumper Heals Funds, which gives money to the Sports and Rec Clubs in the surrounding communities.
Following the jump this year, all jumpers will be encouraged to stop by the Worthington Travelodge, where the hot tub and swimming pool will be available free of charge for them to warm up. In addition, a reception for the jumpers will be offered at 5 p.m. at the Hickory Lodge.
Come for the reception and stay for DJ Barry Roberts spinning tunes at the Hickory Lodge to wrap-up Saturday's Winterfest activities from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.!
