Soldier sentenced to death in Fort Hood shootings


FORT HOOD, Texas (AP) — A military court on Wednesday sentenced Maj. Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 shooting rampage at Fort Hood, giving the Army psychiatrist a path to the martyrdom he appeared to crave in the attack on unarmed fellow soldiers.

The American-born Muslim, who has said he acted to protect Islamic insurgents abroad from American aggression, never denied being the gunman. Tainted fuel damages vehicles in St. Cloud


ST. CLOUD - Police are investigating hundreds of thousands of gallons of contaminated diesel fuel at two St. Cloud area gas stations that caused damage to several vehicles.

Investigators believe the tainted gas at First Fuel Bank locations on Lincoln Avenue SE in St. Cloud and Waite Park in mid-August was intentional.

Nearly 60 customers, including city workers driving recycling and fire trucks, pumped the bad diesel between Aug. 16 and Aug. 23. Many noticed problems with their vehicles within hours of leaving the gas stations.

High temperatures in the 90s combined with dew points in the upper 60s to mid 70s will again result in afternoon heat index values averaging in the upper 90s to around 105 degrees. WORTHINGTON – A federal lawsuit was filed today by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against the Davis Typewriter Company of Worthington, alleging the company failed to take action against a manager who used the store’s surveillance equipment to sexually harass an employee.

MINNESOTA - The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory which went into effect Sunday for northwest Iowa and a large portion of southern Minnesota, as well as parts of South Dakota.

Forecasters suggest those who work or spend time outdoors reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks for those who work outdoors. Additionally, they suggest wearing light-weight and loose-fitting clothing, and drink plenty of water.

Former Murray County resident violates probation; is court ordered against joining volunteer fire departments


SLAYTON – A former Avoca resident who was convicted of receiving stolen property back in 2009 is now told he can not apply to be a member of any fire departments in Minnesota. Joshua DeGuara, age 36, of Winona, was recently convicted of probation violation in Murray County District Court. In 2008, he was charged with receiving stolen property after stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment, fuel and turnout gear from the Avoca Fire Department. He was sentenced to a year in jail, and after serving his sentence moved to Winona.

LUVERNE. – Interstate 90 travelers heading east between Luverne and Magnolia should be aware of lane restrictions and possible delays beginning Sept. 3, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Traffic will be managed with one lane in each direction in the westbound lanes.The Minnesota Department of Transportation has scheduled a project that includes resurfacing 8 miles of I-90 eastbound and constructing approach panels, new railing and new surface to the Rock County Road 3 Bridge. The project is expected to be complete in early November.

WORTHINGTON – Mediacom customers in several areas including Worthington are experiencing problems with video, internet and phone, according to a recording at their local phone number. The recording states their expected time of repair is approximately 2 p.m. today and there is nothing customers need to do at this time.
