LUVERNE – An Adrian man received non-life threatening injuries when he rolled his 2001 Chevrolet K15 Monday on Interstate 90 shortly after 6 p.m., according to the Minnesota State Patrol. John Buckner, age 60, of Adrian, was westbound on I-90 at Highway 75 when the vehicle rolled, coming to rest on its roof. Buckner was taken to Sanford Luverne. Assisting at the scene was Rock County Fire, Ambulance and Sheriff’s Office.

Charges filed in Balaton arson, murder case

BALATON – Charges have been filed in Lyon County District Court against three men accused of burning down the house where Jim Hively, 75, and his wife, Cathy, 71 died Thursday. The complaint states the house was burglarized before the fire.

Charged are Derek Hexum, 20, of Balaton; Theodore Como, 18, of Marshall; and Kyle Wesselink, 21, of Tyler. All appeared in court and remain in custody.

Hexum and Como are each charged with second-degree murder, arson and armed burglary. Wesselink is charged with arson, burglary and receiving stolen property.

The Windsurfing Regatta and Music Festival is just around the corner, and with the sailboards and breeze comes the music. This year, the event, which takes place June 12-14, will be singing a slightly different tune.

According to Ken Moser, the music is no longer ‘unvarnished’. Some bylaw changes have been made that will allow for more current or popular music.

Friday night is Country Night, featuring opening act Todd Hurst, followed by headliner Maiden Dixie. The YMCA’s UV Run will also finish up at Sailboard Beach that night.

WORTHINGTON - Dr. David Mills, Minnesota West Community & Technical College Instructor, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to go to Bashkir State University, located in Ufa, Russia during the 2016 academic year, announced by the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

WORTHINGTON - During a special meeting Wednesday, the District 518 School Board approved a bid for a $5.5 million addition to the Worthington High School that includes the building addition, a parking lot with concrete paving, soil corrections to the building addition and heating, venting and air conditioning upgrades for the school.

The lone bidder was JB Driver Commercial Builders of Rose Creek. The next step will be to work with JB Driver to create a timeline for when the project can be completed before the school enters into a signed contract.

WORTHINGTON – A 37-year-old Worthington man is facing three felony assault charges after allegedly attacking two people and hitting one with a hammer. Anthony Kali Adams was arrested Sunday after authorities were summoned to the emergency room to speak to a victim who said he had been assaulted by Adams.

According to the victim, he went to Adams’ apartment to get some of his clothes, but when he got there he was hit in the neck with a hammer and punched in the face.

PIPESTONE – The Minnesota State Patrol has released the name of the Pipestone man killed in a crash at approximately 6:20 a.m. Friday as Maynard Wogen, age 66. According to the report, Wogen was eastbound on Minnesota 30 when a 2012 International semi truck driven by Bryan Brazeal, age 41, of Gordo, Alabama, ran a stop sign on Pipestone County Road 18 and struck Wogen’s 2001 Audi broadside.

WORTHINGTON – The man who is reportedly within 30 days of acquiring and closing on the Northland Mall has decided it needs a new identity, and he’d like the community’s help finding one.

Brian Pellowski of PBK Investments is the man behind the development that will take over the mall area, and he is offering a $500 award to the person that comes up with the new name for the complex.
