UPDATE: Spirit Lake man accused of murdering Jackson woman

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa – A Spirit Lake man charged with murdering a Jackson woman made an initial court appearance this morning in Dickinson County District Court. Tailer James Handsaker, 21, of Spirit Lake is being held on a $500,000 bond.
The Dickinson County Sheriff's Office states deputies were called to 28th Street in rural Spirit Lake at 10:25 p.m. Sunday after getting a report of an unresponsive female. Authorities say the woman was deceased upon their arrival. She was identified as 36-year-old Sarah Renee Grimmius of Jackson.

WORTHINGTON – Minnesota West Community and Technical College Worthington Campus will host a “Celebrations Around the World” event Friday, coupled with a special showing by Pioneer Public Television of a preview of Season 4 of its popular “Downton Abbey” program.

Body found in Luverne identified by Rock County Sheriff's Office

LUVERNE – A body found in Luverne Saturday morning has been identified by the Rock County Sheriff’s Office as Percy Manning of Luverne, formerly of Chicago, Ill. The sheriff’s office says Manning was 58 years old, however the funeral home assisting the family with arrangements has Manning listed as 59.

Manning was found in the snow at the intersection of Crawford Street and Highway 75 shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Foul play is not suspected, but law enforcement is hoping an autopsy will provide more information. Anyone with information regarding Manning’s death or events...

CLARA CITY – A head-on crash took the life of a Marshall woman Thursday evening on Highway 23 in Chippewa County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Debra Greibel, age 60, of Marshall, was southbound in a 2001 Chevy Malibu when a northbound semi, driven by Yaya Zongo, 39, of Dallas, Texas, lost control and jack-knifed, colliding with Greibel’s vehicle. ADRIAN – A 4-wheeler accident involving a toddler was reported Wednesday shortly after 1 p.m. in Adrian. According to Nobles County Sheriff Kent Wilkening, the child was being given a ride on the 4-wheeler when it flipped and pinned the child beneath the machine. The child, who is 2-years-old, was taken by ambulance to Sanford Worthington, then transferred to Sioux Falls, SD. Wilkening, who classified the injuries as ‘serious,’ had not been given an update on the child’s condition.

WORTHINGTON – The Nobles County Commissioners Tuesday approved a motion to abate 100 percent of the real estate taxes on the Ferrara Candy building in Round Lake for a period of three years. According to Ferrara, that savings of approximately $9,200 a year will be passed on to AGCO so they can use the facility as a warehouse, which could create 20 new jobs.

Last week, the Round Lake City Council opted to approve a 50 percent tax abatement for the same facility, which equals roughly $6,500 per year.

DNR issues warning for aerated lakes

MINNESOTA - The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warns ice anglers, snowmobilers, skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts to use caution when going onto any lake covered or partially covered with ice, especially those that feature aeration systems.

”Open water areas created by aeration systems can shift or change shapes depending on weather conditions," said Marilyn Danks, DNR aquatic biologist. "Leaks may develop in air lines creating other areas of weak ice or open water."

WORTHINGTON – A police chase Saturday in Worthington led the arrest of a Texas man. Following a series of events that began with a complaint of disorderly conduct, Thomas Warborg was arrested for first-degree assault, driving while impaired, fleeing a peace officer and test refusal.

WORTHINGTON – Criminal sexual conduct charges were filed last week on Nobles County District Court against Kenneth Meyerdirk, age 68, of Worthington, according to court documents. Meyerdirk faces one first-degree and three second-degree counts, all of which stem from his alleged contact with a granddaughter that spanned several years.
