WORTHINGTON — The Worthington High School Trojan marching band placed second in Class AA competition at the “Battle of the Bands” parade in Lake Crystal Friday night. Finishing just behind Waconia, Worthington wowed the crowds with its “Mary Poppins”- themed “Over the Rooftop” parade show, receiving the coveted People’s Choice Award as well. WORTHINGTON — A meeting for those interested in applying for funds through the Small Cities Development program for homeowners and rental property projects in Worthington will be on August 20 at an as-of-yet undetermined location. Worthington’s portion of the funds – nearly $600,000 - is enough to cover 22 homeowner properties and six rental units within the specified region. That region’s borders are Oxford Street on the north, Okabena Street on the south, Humiston Street on the west and the railroad tracks on the east.

WORTHINGTON – The Worthington City Council Wednesday awarded a contract to McLaughlin and Schulz of Marshall for improvements to 10th Street and First Avenue Southwest for just under $722,000. Council members also agreed to move forward with plans for the 2013 bituminous overlay project for Fox Farm road. Bids are to be received at 2 p.m. on July 8 and will be considered at the council meeting that night. In the engineering department, the council approved a temporary access agreement for TruShine Truck Wash from the intersection of Cecilee Street and Pauline Avenue.

FEMA denies aid to West, Texas for blast

HOUSTON (AP) — The Federal Emergency Management Agency is refusing to provide money to help rebuild the small Texas town where a deadly fertilizer plant explosion leveled numerous homes and a school, and killed 15 people.

According to a letter obtained by The Associated Press, FEMA said it reviewed the state's appeal to help West but decided that the explosion "is not of the severity and magnitude that warrants a major disaster declaration." FEMA has, however, provided emergency funds to individual residents.

Barn and calves lost in rural Bigelow fire

BIGELOW – Twenty-seven calves and a barn were lost Tuesday evening during a fire in rural Bigelow, according to Bigelow Fire Chief Paul Hohensee.

The fire department was called out at approximately 8:45 p.m. after a neighbor noticed smoke and headed over to the farm near Lake Bella. Hohensee said the property owners were not home at the time of the incident. The neighbor called 911, but when the Bigelow Fire Department arrived, the barn was totally engulfed in flames.

ROUND LAKE/BREWSTER – According to results from Round Lake-Brewster Superintendent Cornelius Smit, the vote to consolidate the two school districts passed by more than 95 percent Tuesday night. More than 60 percent of residents in the districts turned out to cast a ballot, with only 27 votes against the consolidation out of 562 voters.

ROUND LAKE/BREWSTER – According to results from Round Lake-Brewster Superintendent Cornelius Smit, the vote to consolidate the two school districts passed with more than a 95 percent result Tuesday night. More than 60 percent of residents in the districts turned out to cast a ballot, with only 27 votes against the consolidation out of 562 voters.

Both School Boards will meet on Monday at the Round Lake/Brewster High School in Round Lake to canvass the election results and certify the election results to Nobles County Auditor/Treasurer Sharon Balster.

JACKSON – A Lakefield man who was found dead in his vehicle Friday in Clear Lake failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, according to information released Monday by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

23-year-old Cassidy Voss was found shortly before 7 p.m. Friday in his 2005 Mazda, which was partially submerged next to a dock. It was determined that Voss was westbound on Jackson County Road 10 when he missed the curve in the roadway. The vehicle entered the south ditch and struck an approach leading to the lake shore. JACKSON – A Lakefield man is dead after a vehicle he was in was found submerged in Clear Lake west of Jackson. The body of 23-year-old Cassidy Voss was found when the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office was called around 6:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of a car accident. A vehicle was submerged in the lake and Voss was found inside the car as it was pulled out.

Details of the accident have not been released. The investigation continues.
