A chat with new Worthington Police Captain Kevin Flynn

WORTHINGTON – As of 6 a.m. on Friday, Det. Sgt. Kevin Flynn has a new title – Captain Flynn. The City of Worthington announced Friday that Flynn has been named the Captain of the Worthington Police Department.

Flynn, who served as the interim Police Chief after the retirement of Chief Mike Cumiskey, is a 23-year veteran of the department and will act as second-in-command to Chief Troy Appel, who was appointed to that position in September.

The Civil Service Commission met Thursday to interview internal candidates for the open position of Captain with the Worthington Police Department. Following the interviews the Commission made its recommendation and a final selection led to the appointment of Kevin Flynn, a twenty-three year veteran of the Department.

WORTHINGTON – Representatives from the city of Worthington, Nobles County and the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Worthington Regional Economic Development Corporation, gathered with Darlene Vortherms Wednesday to break ground on what will be the new home of PurNet, Inc.

Vortherms told the crowd gathered that she was glad her company was staying in Worthington. She said she hopes to have moved in by May 1 and is hoping for a warm spring.

Before PurNet began its push to expand, the company employed 18 people full-time. They have already added five more....

WORTHINGTON – The city of Worthington will have two new faces in 2015 and a new mayor. Mike Kuhle, who has been a council member in Ward 2 for the past eight years, will finish out his term through 2014, but will move into the position as mayor in January, beating out incumbent Alan Oberloh Tuesday by more than 450 votes. Contender Chris Dybevick finished third, approximately 30 votes behind Oberloh.

LUVERNE – A Tracy man is dead after a fatal crash just 6 miles over the Minnesota/South Dakota border on Highway 23 in Rock County. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, 84-year-old Robert Knott of Tracy was southbound in a Lincoln Town Car at approximately 2:46 p.m. on Monday when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound semi tractor and trailer on the driver side. The semi was driven by Robert Nemmers, age 52, of Dell Rapids, SD. He suffered no apparent injuries. Knott, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

BREWSTER – A 23-year-old Brewster man received non-life threatening injuries when his car landed in the ditch Sunday evening. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Joshua Nibbelink was heading south on Minnesota 60 when he swerved to miss some debris in the road, lost control of his 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and went into the ditch.
