SIBLEY, Iowa – A few details have been released regarding the fatal crash Saturday morning that took the life of a Bigelow woman. Authorities said Monday that Karlee Gustaf, age 21, was northbound on Highway 60 about three-quarters of a mile south of the Iowa-Minnesota border around 6 a.m. when she hit the rumble strips and over-corrected. Her vehicle slid across the frost-covered road into the median and then rolled, coming to rest in the southbound lane.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol were still investigating the crash as of Monday.

WORTHINGTON – On Thursday and Friday at the Casey’s gas station at the intersection of Oxford Street and McMillan, volunteers will be on hand to pump gas for tips from 5 to 8 p.m. to raise money for Rick and Dena Gustaf, who lost their daughter Karlee Mae Gustaf in a vehicle accident Saturday. Money raised will go toward funeral costs.

Karlee was 21 years old, a graduate of Worthington High School. She and her parents lived in Bigelow. She is the sister of Alyssa Clausen and Nate Gustaf.

WORTHINGTON - Melissa Brands of The Achievement Center would like to clarify that the cell phone scam reported Wednesday night regarding false messages from Wells Fargo and in some cases "the Achievement Center" had nothing do with the The Achievement Center in Worthington.

A look at the website CallerCenter.org shows the phone number was used earlier this week to ask people to call either Wells Fargo or “The Achievement Center.” In Some cases, it was called "The Achieve Department." One person reported they called the number and got a message stating the number had been shut off...

WORTHINGTON – Worthington Regional Economic Development Authority Manager Abraham Algadi on Friday spoke with Nobles County Commissioners and Worthington City Council members about a new initiative called “Nobles Home,” a multi-prong approach to encourage investment in all segments of the housing market within incorporated areas of Nobles County. According to Algadi, about 500 new housing units are needed to meet the expected demand in the area by 2020.

WORTHINGTON — The Marketing/Visitors Committee of the Worthington Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is looking for a 2014 Snow Queen to preside over the Winterfest festival set for Jan. 17-18 in Worthington.

Duties for the Snow Queen include representing Worthington in the King Turkey Day Parade and the Holiday Parade, along with other public events throughout the year. Sophomores and juniors in high school will be considered as candidates. The Snow Queen will also receive $100 in Chamber Bucks.

MINNESOTA – Reports poured in Wednesday night about a text message sent to cell phones referencing Wells Fargo Banks, but according to Wells Fargo, the message was not really from them. The message, which asked phone owners to call Wells Fargo, is a scam. Worthington Wells Fargo Officials said they are now aware of the message and advised people to ignore and delete it.

FACU to open branch in Jackson, but not Round Lake

ROUND LAKE – Contrary to what was announced Tuesday during a Nobles County Board of Commissioners meeting, the Fulda Area Credit Union is not currently planning to open a branch office in Round Lake, according to credit union president Linda Jacobson.

They are, however, working toward opening an office in Jackson and hoping to get started in the spring, Jacobson said. The lease for a location has not yet been signed.

WORTHINGTON – In their first meeting of the new year, the Nobles County Commissioners Tuesday nominated and elected Commissioner Marv Zylstra as their 2014 Board Chairman, also approving Commissioner Matt Widboom as Vice-chair.

The commissioners approved the sale of almost $5.7 million in general obligation refunding bonds, which will save the county more than $503,000 over the life of the bonds. WORTHINGTON — The Worthington Public Utilities Water and Light Commission approved funding for solar power to the city’s three new entrance signs Monday at a material cost of $2,431 per sign. That cost does not include installation. The signs themselves will cost approximately $24,000 each, with the cost of two being paid for by the city. HARDWICK – Approximately 3,700 pigs died Sunday night during a fire at a hog farrowing facility northwest of Hardwick, according to information from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and New Horizons Farms.

The facility, one of five farrowing operations owned by New Horizons Farms, is located at the intersection of 221st Street and 90th Avenue. Managing Partner Bob Taubert said it appears to be a total loss, with sows and piglets perishing in the blaze.
