UPDATE: 3,700 pigs die in Hardwick farrowing facility fire Sunday night


HARDWICK – Approximately 3,700 pigs died Sunday night during a fire at a hog farrowing facility northwest of Hardwick, according to information from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office and New Horizons Farms.

The facility, one of five farrowing operations owned by New Horizons Farms, is located at the intersection of 221st Street and 90th Avenue. Managing Partner Bob Taubert said it appears to be a total loss, with sows and piglets perishing in the blaze.

Gov. Dayton cancels all Minnesota schools for Monday


MINNESOTA - With temperatures across Minnesota to stay well below zero on for the next few days, Gov. Mark Dayton has taken the unusual step of cancelling schools statewide for Monday.

Dayton said in a news release Friday the safety of Minnesota’s schoolchildren must be our first priority.

“I have made this decision to protect all our children from the dangerously cold temperatures now forecasted for next Monday,” he stated. “I encourage Minnesotans of all ages to exercise caution in these extreme weather conditions.”

WORTHINGTON – After the spring ice storms of 2013, Nobles Cooperative Electric in Worthington and Federated Rural Electric of Jackson received $3.5 million in federal grants to help fund repairs, but more than $1.7 million in reconstruction costs were denied through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FEMA says the additional funding was denied based on the cooperatives’ failure to have a written, formally adopted and applied code of standard in place.

TRACY – Benjamin Alberg, 17, of Milroy, received non-life threatening injuries when his 2000 Ford pickup ran off the roadway Wednesday morning on Highway 14, a mile and a half east of Tracy. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, Alberg was northbound on Aspen Avenue at 6:55 a.m. when he ran off the road at the Highway 14 intersection. WORTHINGTON -- The Worthington Safe Cab program, a partnership between local law enforcement and business sponsors, will give free rides home to New Year’s Eve revelers on Tuesday night.

The Safe Cab will operate from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.; people need to call the Worthington Taxi Service, 372-4300, to secure a ride. The service will operate from party points around the city, including private residences, but is not intended as a shuttle between venues.

Off-duty law enforcement officers will be behind the wheel of the Safe Cabs to ensure people get home safely.

The Worthington Police Department and the Nobles County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Worthington Taxi Service and Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce, are going to provide taxi service from 10:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. on New Year’s Eve. Local law enforcement is going to provide drivers for the cabs in addition to the taxi drivers.

ST. PAUL -- Influenza is back in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health says across the state, 36 people were newly hospitalized with influenza during the week ending Saturday. That brings total hospitalizations in the state to 104 so far this season. The new hospitalizations were a 50 percent increase over 24 new hospitalizations the previous week, according to numbers released Thursday.

Stoneray Wind Project hearing to take place in Lake Wilson


LAKE WILSON – Citizens interested in finding our more about the Stoneray Wind Project should attend the public hearing at 6 p.m. January 14 at the Lake Wilson American Legion building on Broadway Avenue.

The proposed project includes up to 62 wind turbines on 29,500 acres in Murray and Pipestone Counties. The turbines will range from 1.7 to 3.2 MW, up to a total of 105 MW. Associated facilities would include transmission lines, a project substation, access roads, meteorological towers and an operation and maintenance building.
