Several new laws kick in Thursday

MINNESOTA - Much has been made of a new law that legalizes same-sex marriage in Minnesota, effective Aug. 1. But eight lesser-known laws also take effect on Thursday.

Among them is a new law that adds adult children, spouses, parents, grandparents and step-parents to the family members an employee can take paid sick days to care for. It applies to companies with 21 or more workers.

Another law aims to help Minnesotans struggling to make mortgage payments by offering homeowners new leverage under tighter foreclosure rules.

Yet another law targets pranksters who dial 911 without a real emergency, who will now risk stricter penalties. So will arsonists whose fires damage or pose a threat to five or more buildings or 500 acres.

Also facing tougher penalties will be anyone who assaults a bus or light rail driver. Anyone who assaults a transit driver or throws bodily fluids on them while they are operating their vehicle is subject to a gross misdemeanor.

Another law will allow breweries to sell 64-ounce bottles of beer, or “growlers.” And yet another law will allow law enforcement officials to seize any cash that was used or intended for use in prostitution.
