The Minnesota Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association has also released their Team and Individual Academic Honors for the 2013 season.

Teams earning Gold Awards (Team GPA of 3.75 or greater) include Tracy-Milroy-Balaton in Class A

Teams earning Silver Awards (Team GPA of 3.50 or greater) include Adrian, Windom and Southwestern United in Class A. In Class AA, Jackson County Central and Luverne earned Silver Awards as well.

A number of area athletes will take part in the 25th annual Minnesota High School All-Star Girls Softball Series on June 9th, co-sponsored by the Minnesota High School Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Softball Association. In all, 72 seniors have been chosen to take part in the All-Star Series. The event will be held at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Sunday June 9th with opening ceremonies to begin at 11:30am

The Minnesota Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association has released their All-State Team for the 2013 season.

On the Class A All-State Team, Mountain Lake Area senior Janessa Peters and Murray County Central senior Taylor Schreier were chosen to the Class A All-State Second Team.

On the Class AA All-State Team, Pipestone senior Paige Petersen was chosen to the Class AA All-State First Team. Vorwald signs with Dakota Wesleyan

On Monday, Worthington Trojan Senior Jon Vorwald signed a letter of commitment to continue his basketball career at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Vorwald, who has played on the varsity level since his sophomore season and a 2-year starter for the Trojans, averaged 9.5 points and 4 assists and drew 11 charges in 18 games his senior season. He also earned All-Conference honors in the Southwest Conference this season.

McBreen named to GPAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Squad

Former Southwestern United Baseball standout Kirk McBreen, now a senior second baseman for the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers, has been named to the 2013 Great Plains Athletic Conference's All-Conference honorable mention baseball team.

McBreen, a Heron Lake native and 2009 graduate from Southwest Star Concept high school in Okabena, started all 49 games this season for the Tigers, hitting for a .289 batting average with 5 doubles and 16 RBI's. He also led the team in stolen bases with 14 and had a stellar fielding percentage of .950

Kremer named to NSIC All-Conference 2nd Team

Former Worthington Trojan baseball stanout Steven Kremer, now a sophomore at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, was named to the All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference's second team this week.

Kremer, a native of Wilmont, played in 35 games with 29 starts and finished second on the team with a .374 batting average and second with 13 doubles. He also ranked second in slugging percentage (.566) and fourth in RBIs (22).

Strand to be inducted into Minnesota Girls Basketball Hall of Fame

Four coaches will be inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame and one of the coaches is long-time Adrian Dragon Girls Basketball Coach Randy Strand.

Randy Strand graduated from Tracy High School in 1974 and Moorhead State University in 1978.  Randy Strand began his coaching the Adrian Dragon boys basketball team before taking over the girls basketball program in 1986.

DeCock signs with Iowa Lakes

Red Rock Central senior Jeff DeCock has signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa Lakes Community College and play basketball for the Lakers Men's Basketball team.

DeCock, a 6'2" senior guard, scored 1,376 points in his varsity career with the Falcons, 2nd most in school history.  DeCock set a school record for points in a game with 42.  During his senior season, DeCock averaged 22 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2 steals a game.

Hall chosen as MCAC Softball Player of the Week

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference has released their weekly Softball honors, and Minnesota West’s Alayna Hall was chosen as the Southern Division Co-Player of the Week.

Hall, a sophomore from Glenville, MN, went 4-for-7 at the plate as the Lady Jays split a doubleheader against St. Cloud Tech last Saturday. She had 2 triples, 2 RBI, and scored 3 runs in the two games last Saturday. The Minnesota West Lady Jays are now 3-4 on the season and 1-1 in Southern Division play in the conference.


Basketball Postseason Awards

Both the Minnesota and Iowa Basketball Coaches Association have handed out some postseason honors.

The Minnesota Boys Basketball Coaches Association has released their 2012-2013 Academic All-State Selections.  Area Athletes earning All-State Academic honors included Brett Heronimus of Luverne and Klint Knutson and Dominic Nibbelink both of Southwest Christian.


Also, the Minnesota Boys Basketball Coaches Association has named their Section and State Coaches of the Year.
