A Full Day of Football Friday in Marshall (11/2)

Football Fans all throughout Southern Minnesota will head to Marshall this Friday for four section football championship games at the Regional Events Center on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University.

The first game is the Section 3, 9-Man championship between the #2 seeded Edgerton/Ellsworth Flying Dutchmen and #1 seeded Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley Wolverines.

Hummel to be inducted into Coaches Hall of Fame

The Minnesota State High School Coaches Association is honored to announce its Hall of Fame inductees for 2012 and one of the seven inductees includes former Lakefield, Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield and Jackson County Central Volleyball coach Carolyn Hummel.

 The seven inductees have accumulated impressive success in the sports they have coached. They have reached a pinnacle of coaching success that ranks them in a very special status and exemplifies the greatness of Minnesota high school coaches.

Hayenga-Hostikka to be inducted into Moorhead Hall of Fame

Nine new members, including Worthington native Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka, will be inducted into the Minnesota State University Moorhead Athletics Hall of Fame this fall on Sept. 28.
 
Rosalie Hayenga-Hostikka transferred to Moorhead State after two seasons at Worthington Community College and left a big impression on the Dragons' basketball program.  The Worthington native was a two-year starter at guard while earning third team NAIA All-American and first team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference honors as a senior.  Hayenga was a two-time All-NAIA District...


Windom native Brett Gross to be inducted into Gustavus Hall of Fame

The Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Department has selected nine people into its Athletics Hall of Fame, and one of the 2012 class will be Windom native Brett Gross.

Gross was a standout shot putter who became a 4-time All-Conference performer in outdoor track and field and a 3-time All-Conference performer in indoor track and field.  Gross also earned All-American honors a total of four times in his college career, earning All-American honors twice at the NCAA Indoor Championships and twice at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Cobra Wrestling Team drops from Class AA to Class A beginning 2012-2013

The Windom/Mountain Lake Cobra wrestling program will be moving down a class in the upcoming 2012-2013 wrestling season. For many years, the Mountain Lake and Butterfield-Odin school districts were combined for all athletics, including their pairing with Windom for wrestling. That atheltic pairing between Mountain Lake and Butterfield-Odin came to an end after the last school year with Butterfield-Odin pairing with St. James for sports beginning this upcoming school year.

Lakefield native Chad Kraft to be inducted into University of Minnesota's M Club

The University of Minnesota will celebrate its rich athletics tradition this September with the induction of nine former Golden Gophers in to the M Club Hall of Fame and one of this year’s inductees will include former Heron Lake-Okabena-Lakefield wrestling standout Chad Kraft.

Kraft, a native of Lakefield, MN, had an amazing prep career in high school. Kraft finished his high school wrestling career with a 195-14-1 record. He was a state wrestling participant four times, finishing in 5th place his freshman year while winning the state championship the following 3 years. ...

Tara Svalland of Worthington finished 11th in the high jump, clearing 5’2”

Sarah Buysse of Marshall ran a 59.02 in the prelims of the 400 meter dash and qualified for Saturday’s finals. In the finals, Buysee finished 9th in a time of 59.50

Sarah Anderson of Marshall finished in 10th with a jump of 35 feet-5 inches

Kramer breaks SSC single game scoring record

Southwest Star Concept junior forward Andrew Kramer set a new school record, scoring 42 points in SSC’s Section 2A, South Sub-Section Quarterfinal win over Springfield 75-68 on Tuesday night. Kramer broke the record of 37 points previously held by Ben Scheevel and Jameson Collin. Southwest Star Concept will now face top seeded Mankato Loyola in Mankato on Thursday night.
