Four coaches will be inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame and one of the coaches is long-time Adrian Dragon Girls Basketball Coach Randy Strand.
Randy Strand graduated from Tracy High School in 1974 and Moorhead State University in 1978. Randy Strand began his coaching the Adrian Dragon boys basketball team before taking over the girls basketball program in 1986.
Strand’s girls’ teams’ have won 428 games over 27 seasons, winning 70 percent of their games. Adrian has had ten 20-win season during that span, collecting 8 Red Rock Conference Championships. In tournament play, Strand’s teams have played for the South Sub-Section 3A Championship 8 times and advanced to the Section 3A finals 3 times. Strand’s 2008-2009 squad advanced to the Minnesota State Girls Basketball Tournament for the first time in school history, falling to Barnum in the Class A State Quarterfinals.
An advocate for girls basketball in the state of Minnesota, Strand has served on the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association as Section 3A representative for 6 years. He also served on the Minnesota State High School League Region 3 Committee from 2007 to 2011. On the MSHSL committee, Strand was selected as the girls’ basketball committee chairman for 4 years as well as serving on the committee for 8 seasons.
The other 3 members to be inducted in this year’s class includes Dave Rund of Fergus Falls, John Hardgrove of Mahtomedi and Stillwater and longtime official and basketball clinician Harry Kitts. The induction ceremony is scheduled for 5:00pm on Friday at St. Thomas University in St. Paul. Also this weekend at St. Thomas is the Minnesota Girls Basketball All-Star Series, this Friday and Saturday. Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Paige Erickson was selected to play for the Class A All-Stars this weekend and this year’s Miss Basketball in Minnesota will be announced this weekend.
