Final Results for Area Wrestlers at 2014 Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament

A number of area wrestlers began their trip to a state championship on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Here's a look at how the weekend shaped up for our area grapplers

Class AA Wrestlers
Worthington wrestlers:
106 pounds: Hser eh Pwae picked up a 5-2 decision win in the opening round over #9 Jackson Stauffacher of Scott West. Hser eh Pwae lost a 12-10 decision in overtime to AJ Bethea of Hibbing in a state quarterfinal. In the wrestlebacks, Hser Eh Pwae lost a 5-2 decision to #2 Anthony Phillipson of Peqout Lakes/Pine River-Backus, eliminating him from the tournament

126 pounds: #2 Anthony Luft won a 12-2 major decision in the first round over Aaron Sistrunk of Chisago Lakes Area. Luft picked up quick first period pin in 53 seconds over #1 David Flynn of Scott West in the state quarterfinals, advancing Luft to Saturday’s State Semifinals where he took on #3 Tyler Funk of Foley. Last season, Luft beat Funk in triple overtime 7-5 in the 120 pound State Championship and this one was a classic as well. Anthony Luft picked up 2 big back points with under 15 seconds to go to defeat Funk 3-2, sending him to the title match where he took on #4 Cortez Arrendondo of Simley. For the second straight season, Anthony Luft walked off the mat in his final match of the year as a state champion, and another thrilling overtime win like last year. Luft trailed by one going late into the 3rd period when Luft scored a takedown to take a 1 point lead. However Arrendondo got an escape point with 4 seconds left to force overtime. But in the OT, Luft sealed the championship with a takedown in the sudden death overtime to win his 2nd straight championship. Anthony Luft is the Class AA State Champion at 126 pounds and finishes the season with a 42-2 record

160 pounds: #9 Zach Kempema picked up a win in the first round, winning by an 11-3 major decision over Joe Heinz of New Prague. Kempema lost a 7-5 decision to #10 Carter Focht of Mahtomdei in the state quarterfinals, dropping him to the wrestlebacks. Kempema picked up a 5-3 decision victory over Jared Florell of Totino-Grace, putting him in consolation quarterfinals where he picked up a 7-3 decision win in overtime over Jake Pramann of Princeton. Kempema advanced to the consolation semifinals where he won a thrilling 6-4 decision in overtime over #3 Dane Ringquist of Fergus Falls and wrestled for 3rd place, getting a rematch with Carter Focht of Mahtomedi. But again Focht got the better of Kempema as Zach Kempema loses a 7-3 decision and finishes in 4th place in Class AA at 160 pounds

170: #10 Blake Schroeder was a first-round winner for the Trojans, picking up a 7-5 decision win over Billy Merth of St. Paul Highland Park. Schroeder lost in the state quarterfinals by a 10-0 major decision to #3 Josh Selly of Tri-City United, dropping Schroeder into the wrestlebacks. Schroeder picked up a win by technical fall (16-0) over Cole Schmitz of Perham, advancing him into Saturday morning’s consolation quarterfinals, where Schroeder lost a 6-0 decision against Billy McClay of Princeton, eliminating him from the tournament

195: #2 Carson Hagen lost a 3-2 decision in triple overtime to #6 Mitch Struffert of Foley. Struffert won his quarterfinal so Hagen entered the wrestlebacks where he lost a 3-2 decision in 4 overtimes to #5 Paxton Jordahl of Hutchinson, eliminating him from the tournament

Fulda/Murray County Central:
113: Clayton Hartle picked up a win in the first round by pinfall in 4:59 over Justin Swetala of Richfield and advanced to the state quarterfinals. Hartle lost an 8-4 decision to #6 Anthony Jackson of Simley in the state quarterfinals, dropping Hartle to the wrestlebacks. Hartle lost an 11-4 decision to #4 Jacob Jewett of Glencoe-Lester Prairie, eliminating him from the tournament

Luverne:
182: Spencer Oeltjenbruns lost to #8 Austin May of Zimmerman by a 4-2 decision in the opening round. May won his state quarterfinal so Oeltjenbruns entered the wrestlebacks where he lost to #5 Brian Bertram of Byron by an 11-3 major decision, eliminating him from the tournament

Adrian wrestlers:
106: #2 Skylar Hieronimus picked up a win in the opening round over Adam Legred of Blue Earth Area by pinfall at 2:45 in the 2nd period. Hieronimus got another win in the state quarterfinals with a 9-2 decision over #7 Willie Meine of Fertile-Beltrami to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Hieronimus won in the state semifinals picking up a 7-5 decision win over #4 Tanner Pasvogel of Sibley East. Hieronimus wrestled a very familiar opponent in Minneota/Lincoln HI’s Brock Buysee in the State Title match. Those two meet during the Section 3AA Team Championship, with Buysse defeating Hieronimus, with Hieronimus turning the table during the championship match at the Section 3AA tournament. They were the top two ranked wrestlers heading into the state tournament. The championship turned out to be a classic, as Hieronimus trailed 1-0 until the last 5 seconds of the match when he successfully got a takedown for a last second victory. Skylar Hieronimus of Adrian is the Class A State Champion at 106 pounds and finishes the season with a 42-2 record

132: Michael Preuss lost to #3 Jason Meyer of Sibley East by a 7-3 decision in the opening round. Meyer won his state quarterfinal, so Preuss entered the wrestlebacks, where he won by fall in 3:53 over Kole Lefebvre of Mahnomen/Waubun and advanced to the consolation quarterfinals Saturday. In the consolation quarterfinals, Michael Preuss lost by fall in the 3rd period at 3:59 to Ted Androli of Kenyon-Wanamingo, eliminating him from the tournament

138: #4 Tony Lynn won a 5-4 decision over Sam Baier of River Valley in the opening round. However, a hamstring injury suffered during that win in the first round forced Lynn to withdraw from the tournament

170: #3 Jesse Slater won an 8-2 decision over Sid Scott of Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial in the opening round. Slater lost to #1 Keegan Moore of Jackson County Central in the state quarterfinals by pinfall in 48 seconds, dropping Slater to the wrestlebacks. Slater would pick up a win by fall in 4:31 over Alex Fuchs of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, advancing Slater to the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday. Slater picked up a 4-2 decision over Drew Sathrum of Kenyon-Wanamingo to advance to the consolation semifinals where he picked up an 8-5 victory over Daven Staples of Blackduck/Cass Lake Bena. In the 3rd place match, Slater walked off the mat victorious, picking up a 7-6 win over Austin Maanum of Border West. Jesse Slater finishes in 3rd place in Class A at 170 pounds

Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras:
113: #5 Wyatt Stevens lost to Dillon Kubiatowicz of New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva by a 3-2 decision. Kubiatowicz lost in the quarterfinals, eliminating Stevens from the tournament.

120: #4 Joe Fischenich lost by fall in 5:34 to Ryan Killeen of Spectrum. Killeen lost his state quarterfinal, eliminating Fischenich from the state tournament

132: #2 Jared Willaby picked up a win by a 10-3 decision victory in the opening round over Kyle Michalek of Blackduck/Cass Lake-Bena. Willaby won his state quarterfinal over #7 Levi Marsh of Lake Crystal-Wellcome-Memorial by a 10-3 decision. Willaby lost in the State Semifinals to #1 Quinten Berres of Kimball Area by a 3-1 decision, dropping Willaby into the Consolation semifinals where he picked up a 4-0 win over Ted Androli of Kenyon-Wanamingo. Jared Willaby takes home 3rd place after winning a 2-1 decision in 4 overtimes against Cody Weiland of Crookston

195: #4 Vince Johnson won an 8-3 decision over Tristan Palmer of United South Central in the first round. Johnson won in the state quarterfinals with a 7-3 decision over #6 Jake Denn of Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther. Johnson won his State Semifinals against Hunter Fick of West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville by a 4-3 decision. Johnson took on #1 Nathan Rose of Sibley East for the State Title, but it Rose defeating Johnson by an 11-3 major decision in the championship match. Vince Johnson finishes in 2nd place in Class A at 195 pounds

Jackson County Central:
106: #10 Dalton Wagner won by a 20-5 technical fall over Noah Bauer of Pine Island in the first round. Wagner lost in the state quarterfinals to #5 Caleb Kreitter of Crosby-Ironton by an 11-2 major decision. In the wrestlebacks, Wagner fell by a 6-5 decision in triple overtime to Mario Garcia of St. James Area, eliminating him from the tournament

120: Ryker VanderWoude lost by fall in 57 seconds to #10 Ty VanSickle of Chatfield. VanSickle lost in the state quarterfinals, eliminating VanderWoude from the state tournament.

126: #3 Jordan Biehn won in the opening round with a 17-4 major decision over Nicholas Kaml of Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. Biehn won again in the state quarterfinals, picking up an 8-7 decision victory over #7 Zach Scott of Holdingford. Biehn lost in the state semifinals to #8 Patrick Ramirez of Triton by a 1-0 decision. Biehn lost to #2 Blane Tschida of Kimball Area in the consolation semifinals by a 15-0 technical fall and will wrestle for 5th place. Jordan Biehn takes home 5th place by winning a 5-1 decision over Zach Scott of Holdingford

152: #2 Paden Moore won in the opening round with a fall in 1:24 over Mitch Wentzlaff of Sibley East. Moore won his state quarterfinal over #6 Jerod Novak of Aitkin by fall in 1:24. Moore lost in Saturday’s State Semifinals to #1 Logan Peterson of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City by a 6-4 decision in overtime. Moore dropped to the Consolation semifinals where he picked up a 15-2 major decision victory over Devin Meagher of Paynesville Area. In his 3rd Place match, Paden Moore picked up a 9-2 decision victory over #9 Shane Siewert of Lake City to finish in 3rd place

160: #3 Luke Norland won in the opening round with by a 13-3 major decision over Hobet Diaz of Pelican Rapids. Norland picked up a 14-2 major decision victory over #8 Cain Renner of Eden Valley-Watkins in the state quarterfinals. Norland lost in Saturday’s State Semifinals to #7 Andrew Dayland of St. Charles by a 2-1 decision and drops to the Consolation semifinals where he picked up a 5-3 decision in overtime over Aaron Trio of Maple River. In the 3rd place match, Luke Norland lost an 11-5 decision to Zachary Carlson of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to finish in 4th place

170: #1 Keegan Moore won by fall in 2:34 over Alex Fuchs of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the first round. Moore won by a fall in 48 seconds over #3 Jesse Slater of Adrian in a state quarterfinal. Moore won by fall in 2:22 in the State Semifinals over #2 Austin Maanum of Border West, advancing Keegan Moore to the State Championship where he picked up a win by a 22-7 technical fall over Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska Area. Keegan Moore is the Class A State Champion at 170 pounds and finished the season with a 48-0 record.

285: Nathan Horn lost to Tanner Walsh of Dover-Eyota by a 3-0 decision. Walsh won his state quarterfinal, putting Horn in the wrestlebacks where he lost to #5 Cole Grinsteinner of Crosby-Ironton by a 1-0 decision, eliminating him from the tournament.

Pipestone:
113: #9 Michael Suda won in the opening round with a 17-7 major decision over Brennen Holien of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. Suda lost to #1 Austin Anderly of LeSueur-Henderson in a state quarterfinal by a 3-1 decision, dropping Suda to the wrestlebacks, where he picked up a win by a 7-0 decision over Zach Buseman of Blue Earth Area. On Saturday, Suda picked up an 8-1 decision over Danny Franco of Pelican Rapids in the Consolation Quarterfinals. Suda lost a 7-5 decision to Esteban Teigen of Spectrum in the consolation semifinals. Michael Suda won his 5th place match against Trenton Coyer of Osakis by a 10-3 decision

152: #4 Brady Bos won in the opening round with a 7-4 decision over Devin Meagher of Paynesville Area. Bos won his state semifinal over Royal Crow of West Central Area/Ashby/Evansville by a score of 4-1. Bos lost to #3 Harvey Friederichs of Chatfield in a State Semifinal by a 9-0 major decision. Bos lost by a 3-2 decision to Shane Siewert of Lake City in a consolation semifinal. In the 5th place match, Brady Bos picked up an 8-7 decision victory over Devin Meagher of Paynesville Area to finish in 5th place

182: Will Smith lost to #1 Niko Anderson of Fillmore Central/Lanesboro/Mabel-Canton by a 13-5 major decision. Anderson won his state quarterfinal, putting Smith in the wrestlebacks where lost to #3 Maverick Whitcomb of Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City by a 10-1 major decision, eliminating him from the tournament

Wabasso/Red Rock Central:
120: #2 Spencer Jenniges got a win over #5 Conrad Kondos of Breckenridge/Campbell-Tintah by an 8-1 decision in the opening round. Jenniges won his state quarterfinal over #7 Brandon Sullivan of Pierz by a by a 6-0 decision. Jenniges will wrestle for a state championship after picking up a 5-3 decision over Miguel Ambriz of Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in a state semifinal. In the championship match, Jenniges lost to #1 Cameron Sykora of Border West by a 15-0 technical fall and finished in 2nd place

170: #4 Jordan Schroepfer lost a 6-1 decision to #6 Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska Area. Stottler won his state quarterfinal, putting Schroepfer in the wrestlebacks where he lost by a 3-1 decision to Sam Swanson of Trinity School at River Ridge, eliminating him from the tournament.

220: Jared Welch lost by fall in 5:48 to #6 Tyler Olson of Maple River. Olson lost in the state quarterfinals, eliminating Welch from the tournament.

285: #1 Alex Schroepfer won in the opening round by fall in 32 seconds over Mike Schively of Wabasha-Kellogg. Schroepfer won by pin again in the state quarterfinals, by fall in 2:16 over #2 Garrett Malstrom of Frazee. Schroepfer advanced to the State Semifinals where he picked up a pin in 51 seconds over #3 Martin Granados of Blue Earth Area to advance to the state championship where took home the state title with a 9-5 win over Taylor Carlson of United North Central. Alex Schroepfer is the Class A State Champion at 285 pounds, finishing the season with a 41-0 record.
