Former Worthington District #518 School Teacher and long-time Worthington Trojan Boys Basketball Coach Don Basche died on Wednesday, July 9th after suffering a stroke. The 80-year-old Basche fell ill during a Hospice Cottage Inc. Board of Directors meeting and passed away at the Sanford Worthington Medical Center.
Don Basche was a Worthington High School Graduate from the Class of 1952. After graduation, Basche went on to Worthington Community College and played Football, Basketball, Tennis and Track and won a conference championship in basketball. After WCC, Basche would go on to play Football, Basketball and run Track at North Dakota State University.
Don Basche was an instructor with the school district and was the Head Coach of the Worthington Trojan Boys Basketball team for 24 years and won the Region 2AA Coach of the Year Award during his coaching career. He was inducted into the Worthington High School's Trojan Hall of Fame in 1990. Basche was also awarded the Worthington Community College Alumni Coaching Award and awarded an Honorary Chapter FFA Award.
After his retirement, Basche was very active in the Worthington community, serving on the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors and was the chairman of the Rock-Nobles Community Corrections board as well.
Funeral Services for Don Basche will be held Saturday, July 12th at 10:30am at the American Lutheran Church in Worthington.
A visitation will be held on Friday, July 11th at the American Lutheran Church from 5:00pm-7:30pm with a visitation at the Church Saturday morning at 9:30am
Burial will take place at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sunset Hospice Cottage or the American Lutheran Church in Worthington.
